Frederick
(RICK) Martin of Heavy Metal Forge is a veteran
Artisan/Craftsman and
a Master BLACKSMITH with over 20 years of experience and
knowledge of the BLACK metals and other historic trades.
Rick trained at Old Sturbridge Village and then set up
his own shop. He maintains associations with many places
including Storrowton Village, Hancock Shaker Village and
Historic Deerfield. You can find Rick's hooks are in the museum at Foxwoods.
He makes many different types of functional items out of
iron and steel at his coal fired forge in Hatfield
Mass., right in the middle of the Connecticut River
Valley. The Heavy Metal Forge shop, filled with many period tools, is an
out building from the 19th century New England Farmhouse
he and his wife Christina, and 3 Cats, live in.
Rick’s designs are Traditional & Contemporary. He
specializes in household items for people and
institutions that are restoring 18th & 19th century
houses and buildings.
Some of the things Rick makes are Hooks, Nails, Plant
Hangers, Garden Stakes, Pot Racks, Custom Fire Place
Tools and Decorative Crystal Baskets. All items are hand
made using traditional methods of blacksmiths from over
150 years ago.
Rick Teaches basic blacksmithing Classes as well.
Come and spend a day with him for one on one lessons and
learn how to make hooks and nails. Lunch provided.
Rick also has a Portable Forge available for
demonstrations. He can come and blacksmith for you at
your School, Museum, Historical Society or event!
